Jump to RecipeI’ve been hearing about this whole ‘whitening you teeth with charcoal’ thing for awhile now.
But, let me be honest with ya.
I have been a bit scared to try it.
What if my teeth get stained black?!
I mean, have you seen what happens when it gets in grout, or on some clothes?
I’ve had charcoal powder around in our home for awhile now, because I use it in my homemade soap bars. So I, of all people, know of the staining power of charcoal!
But I’m here to tell ya, that it will all be ok.
I finally worked up the courage to try it, and not only did it all wash off, but it leaves my teeth a little whiter every time!
It’s like magic!
I already have a wonderful simple toothpaste recipe on my blog HERE. But this recipe that incorporates activated charcoal and turmeric powder is on a whole other level!
How Charcoal Works
Activated charcoal is a very absorbent substance. It removes toxins when they attach themselves to the surface of the charcoal. It is not absorbed by the body, but passes through the GI system, so chemicals and toxins bind to it. Then they pass through the body and are expelled by the digestive system.
In the 1800s, two men took lethal doses of poisons (including arsenic) and survived without harm…
Their secret?
They mixed the poisons with activated charcoal powder.
But please do not try that yourselves, obviously!
Activated charcoal is amazing at binding to toxins from all kinds of things, including household chemicals, medicines that have been ingested, and other chemicals from the body. Especially when the charcoal is taken within 30 minutes of ingestion. For this reason, it is a great first treatment for any kind of poisoning, but should not be taken within several hours of medications (or even vitamins) that DO need to be absorbed. Cause that would be a bummer!
Charcoal is not a substance I would take regularly, as it can cause constipation and block mineral absorption if it is taken when it is not needed. Also, it can’t be mixed with dairy products or many foods, as they make it less effective. Charcoal can also cause dehydration in large doses so it is important to consume plenty of water when consuming charcoal.
Activated charcoal can actually be helpful in changing the pH and health of the mouth, and as such is effective in preventing cavities and killing the bad bacteria present in tooth decay and gingivitis.
So you can see how it would be wonderfully effective at cleaning your teeth! Even though your mouth will temporarily be black and a little scary, it will pull out all the toxins and remove the stains.
How Turmeric Works
Turmeric owes much of its amazing medicinal power to its active component, curcumin, which also gives turmeric its incredibly rich orange-yellow color. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for all kinds of medicinal purposes, including the treatment of infections, skin diseases, stress, and depression.
Turmeric benefits are also known to include its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even anticancer effects, making it a powerful way to prevent and even treat many common and chronic health concerns.
This study found that it had a positive effect on gingival inflammation, while this Journal of Natural Biology, Science & Medicine review concluded that it can be beneficial for dental pain.
Isn’t that amazing that two ingredients that are so easily accessible and so affordable, are so effective at whitening the teeth?
Americans spend over a billion dollars a year on over-the-counter tooth whitening products, most of the time without being aware of the risks. Thankfully, we don’t need them.
We can simply head to our pantry and most likely find at least one ingredient that whitens naturally. Not only is it a safer option, it’ll save you a lot of money, too.

Charcoal Turmeric Toothpaste Recipe
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 2 tbsp charcoal powder
- 5 tbsp turmeric powder
- 20 drops peppermint essential oil
- 20 drops clove essential oil
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
First we are going to measure out our coconut oil. We want it to either be melted or just softened, so it is easier to stir into our other ingredients.
Add in all the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. If the coconut oil isn’t as soft, it helps to use the kitchen aid to mix it. It’s a lot stronger than me 😉
Then let it sit for about 15 minutes. I do this because it seems like when the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide combine, they have some sort of chemical reaction and it starts expanding.
More times than I care to admit I’ve instantly scooped it into jars and put them away in the bathroom, only to come across a huge mess of a puddle later.
So now I always just let it sit in the mixing bowl before I’ll put it in jars.
After that, spoon it into your jar. I like to store it in pint or half-pint glass mason jars.
