Jump to RecipeI don’t know if y’all have noticed yet, that I’m just slightly obsessed with DIY stuff.
If there is a possibility I could make it instead of buying it from the store, then I will give it my best shot.
In fact, I’m very disappointed in myself when I can’t find a way to make something myself and have it work properly.
Like dishwasher soap.
Man, I’ve tried and tried to find or make up a good recipe, and it still eludes me!
It feels wrong to me to buy any natural care products or cleaning products, or almost anything from the store anymore!
Why I Love DIY-ing
Did you know that the average woman puts 168 different chemicals on her body every single day?
Over 12,000 chemicals are used in various cosmetics, and out of that number only 10 percent have been evaluated for safety.
Isn’t that crazy?!
What goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it. Generally if it isn’t healthy enough to eat then I wouldn’t put it on my skin.
When substances hit your skin, they will seep through to the bloodstream, sometimes as fast as 30 seconds, depending on where you put them.
This is my all time favorite lip balm recipe. It literally has only 4 simple ingredients, all of which are very healthy and nourishing, and I can pronounce all of them! Unlike a lot of store-boughten products like this which are full of chemicals and substances I’ve never heard of!
I have a few base ingredients that I use for almost all my homemade products. So you just have to invest a little and get those few items, then you are good to go! You can make so many countless things with them! Lotion, bath salts, belly balm, bug balm, toothpaste, sunscreen, just to name a few!

Cooling Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe
- 1 oz shea butter
- 1 oz coconut oil
- 1 oz beeswax
- 15 drops peppermint essential oil
I weigh out the oil, butter and wax into a double boiler. I use a little kitchen scale to measure them out. My double boiler is just a glass bowl sitting inside a pot of water.
Simple, but works well for me.
Turn the burner onto medium or high, and let it boil until all the oils are melted.
Adding Your Essential Oils
Take the bowl out of the boiler and add in your 15 drops of peppermint essential oil.
You can substitute the essential oil for whatever your favorite is. If you are going for a cooling lip balm like mine I recommend using peppermint, wintergreen or eucalyptus. Or a combination of those three. But for today’s, I am just using peppermint. Nice and simple 🙂
You could go a totally different direction and use something like lavender. The only oils I would caution you against are any citrus oils. Those are photosensitive, which means that if you have them on your skin and you spend some time out in the sun, they can give you some pretty severe burns. So I stay away from using any oils like orange, lemon, or grapefruit for this.
Put it in the lip balm tubes
Next we need to get the liquid lip balm into our lip balm tubes before it hardens up. Beeswax has a really high melting point so it will start hardening very quickly. In fact, it hardens as you pour it into the tubes, it is very cool to watch!
I like to use a turkey baster to carefully pour the lip balm into the tubes. You can get these special trays to pour the balm through into the tubes and that makes it go faster, or use a small funnel or an old medicine syringe, but a turkey baster has always worked well for me.
Now it’ll only take about 10 minutes to harden up completely. Sometimes I’ll put it in the fridge to make it go faster, and to ensure that none of it leaks out of the bottom of the tubes before it is solid. Which, unfortunately has happened to us before.
And then it’s ready to use! This recipe makes around 20 tubes.
I like to put all my labels on them right away so that its done, and I also sell these in my online store HERE!
These make excellent gifts! Christmas gifts, stocking stuffers, wedding favors, you name it! Everyone enjoys a handmade lip balm! Or just something to have on hand for your family. Either during the cold winter or hot summer, when lips get dry and chapped! Plus it also just adds a nice gloss to your lips!
And blessings.
