Farmhouse Bathroom Part 1

Who on earth starts remodeling their one and only bathroom while they are 30 weeks pregnant, and winter is about to hit?

Oh right!

That would be us.

I guess we are gluttons for punishment.

When we bought our house 6 months ago, the house itself was not high on the to-do list. We quickly set our priorities and acquiring laying hens and barn cats, building the chicken coop, fencing and garden beds were the big hitters. But as the summer has faded, we have turned our attention inward.

Farmhouse Bathroom Part 1

The bathroom is now almost completely gutted – save for the toilet and shower – we will try to save those as long as possible – mostly because of the 30 weeks pregnant thing (I have to pee every 5 seconds).

We ripped everything down to the original 100+ year old shiplap walls, plank floors and ceiling. Which I was totally thrilled were under all that ugly drywall! I love old shiplap stuff. Which uncovered more than a few huge holes into the crawlspace. By this point, that doesn’t even come close to freaking me out. I am a farm girl after all – if I can butcher a chicken, surely I can handle some holes in our house.

But then the cats came around….

They found a way into the crawlspace and then into the house, in the middle of the night. And if you were wondering, they are NOT normally allowed in the house at night.

Then they proceed to absolutely wreak havoc!

They ate the butter off the table.

Climbed the curtains.

They raced up and down the stairs for hours. Which sounded like a herd of elephants.

They clawed the furniture.

Hence why they are not allowed in the house at night….

I kept throwing them out and they would just get right back in. Big mistake! You do not want to make the pregnant lady miss out on some of her precious sleep.

But in my half-awake, yet very angry state, I could not, for the life of me figure out how they were getting in. So I surrendered. I closed our bedroom door and tried not to think about what they were doing out there.

They are lucky that they’re cute.

See how cute?

Anyway, we now have the house sealed off from pesky cats. Back on to the bathroom remodel!

Here is what it looked like when we first moved in – I pulled this from the property listing.

First things first

The first thing we did when we moved in was pull up the horrid carpet, and then the layer of soggy particle board, and then a layer of sticks. Yes, you heard me right. Sticks. Like off a tree. Don’t ask, because I have no idea. Which then exposed a layer of some strange laminate tiles, where we left it until this last week.

Luke pulled down two layers of drywall off the walls and the ceiling, and the layer of laminate flooring. Underneath it all is some awesome old planks! Which makes that part easy, because we don’t have to put any new stuff in, just restore the old stuff. Except for one wall, the one the vanity was up against, that one was just too bad to restore – so we will put new shiplap up.

And after tearing that layer of choppy shiplap down we discovered that the room isn’t insulated. The whole house probably isn’t. And apparently putting in studs weren’t a high priority either. Frankly sometimes I wonder how this house keeps standing.

My view into the bathroom from the kitchen while working on canning some roasted tomatoes over the weekend.

Our next steps are, adding in new studs, insulating, and putting in all new electrical!

I’m really starting to be able to picture in my head what I want it to look like and I can’t wait to see it happen! Hopefully before baby comes in a couple months. But I’m not gonna tell y’all my plans just yet 😉

I want it to be a surprise! Keep an eye out on the blog for Farmhouse Bathroom, Part 2!! But, here are a few teaser photos of some of the items that will be going into the bathroom, since I know y’all are dying to see at least something!
