Jump to RecipeOk, um, I’m a little obsessed with warm cozy drinks.
Especially when there is snow on the ground.
I’m sure I’m not the only one…
What? I am?!
You all should be ashamed.
Just kidding, I know I’m not the only one 😉
We are getting so close to Christmas, which I am just ridiculously excited about. And this is the perfect time to share my one and only, world’s best hot chocolate recipe with y’all.
Because it is basically a law that you have to have it on Christmas eve.
Why make your own hot cocoa?
This hot cocoa recipe is just full of not only fabulously delicious ingredients, but also healthy ones as well!
Hot chocolate packets from the store are full of processed refined sugars and toxins and GMOs.
Which is kinda stupid because it is so easy to just make your own, and most people have these ingredients on hand all the time. Ingredients that are nutritious, whole, healthy and good for your body.
If you’re going to enjoy hot cocoa, why not make it healthy as well as yummy?
Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe
- 1/3 cup maple syrup or honey
- 1/2 cup raw cacao powder (or cocoa powder)
- 5 cups raw milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch of salt
- 3 scoops collagen (code WILSONHOMESTEAD to save)
- 2 drops peppermint essential oil, optionally
Step one:
Whisk together the maple syrup, cacao powder, vanilla extract and salt in a pot.
I like to whisk these together first because it helps the cacao powder incorporate easily and not have chunks of powder floating at the top of your drink when it’s finished.
Much better to not have chunks.
No chunks allowed in my hot cocoa!

Step two:
Pour in the milk slowly as you whisk it. This should help it to incorporate beautifully and be nice and smooth.
I use raw cow’s milk for this step, but of course, you can use goat’s milk too, or if you don’t have access to it or can’t afford raw, you can use any milk from the store.
Raw milk is just always better in my opinion.
Step three:
Set the pot on the burner and turn to low. Just heat it to the temperature you prefer. We just want to be careful to not scorch it (hence the low burner). So I keep walking past and whisking it and checking the temperature with my finger.
Yup, I’m a dirty farm girl, I check the temperature with my finger.
What a barbarian.
Step four:
Once it’s hot enough, take it off the burner. Add the three scoops of collagen and whisk it in well.
If you are adding peppermint essential oil for a fabulous peppermint cocoa beverage, you can drop it in at this point, and whisk it in. You want to add it in after you take it off the burner so that the essential oil isn’t damaged by the heat.
Now just pour it into your favorite mug, and enjoy!
See how easy that was?! Definitely worth it to not be consuming the sugars and toxins that are in the store cocoa packets!
Why I use raw cacao instead of cocoa powder
Cacao (not cocoa! don’t get confused here!) is packed with flavonoids. Which are nutrients that have been shown to help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow to the brain and heart, and help prevent blood clots.
The flavonoids in cacao powder may help increase insulin sensitivity, reducing your risk of diabetes.
The beans are processed at low temperatures and are considered raw. Once milled into powder, it contains a much higher amount of enzymes, minerals, and nutrients.
Raw cacao powder is made from fermented, dried, unroasted cacao beans, which means they are less processed and healthier. Fermentation reduces the phytic acid content making it easier to digest and absorb all the beneficial minerals.
Cocoa powder is still a good option, but with all the research pointing towards the fact that cacao is even healthier, I have switched to buying cacao powder exclusively. I get it from Azure Standard.
Dairy free option
Like I said, I love to use raw cows milk in this, but you can also use other kinds of milk as well.
My husband doesn’t always do well with dairy, so when I make this for all of us I’ll use coconut milk. Which is totally delicious because it add just a little bit of coconut flavor.
He does good with goats milk as well so if we have access to that I will use it, and it is very similar to the cows milk option.
All this to say, you can use whatever kind of milk that you are able to tolerate and it will still be fabulous.
See, now you have no excuse to not try this recipe 😉
I hope you enjoy this homemade hot chocolate recipe as much as we do!
And blessings.
Pin it for later!
