Making My Kitchen Cozy For Christmas

We are in early December. You can tell by the cold air and frost over the whole land every morning.
And also the occasional snow. Man, I wish it would snow more often. In my perfect winter world, it would snow in the fall, about 3 feet, and then not get below a foot until the spring.
Yes, clearly I love the snow.
I love being out in the snow, stomping through it with big boots, snowboarding, sledding with the kids. It is just fun. Very fun.
The snow gives us all a much needed rest from the hard work of the summer. We can just take our tired selves, and curl up by the fireplace with some hot coffee in one hand and a cookie in the other.
And that is only made possible by my 100+ year old, cozy, hardworking, rustic, mid-renovation, farmhouse kitchen.
Making My Kitchen Cozy For Christmas
My kitchen.
It is my pride and joy. It is the room that I spend the majority of my waking house in. The room where I am able to make all the food that keeps my family alive. And where I make all the food that makes them happy as well.
We have been through a lot together, me and this kitchen.
When we moved in, the floor was carpeted (I know! For shame! Who’s idea was that?!?!). The refrigerator was on the other side of the room. The east wall was blank (no cabinets or anything). The walls were covered in ugly, stained, dirty, cracked, drywall. The countertops were a dirty looking cream laminate. It was entirely unacceptable. But it was a place for me to make beautiful and welcoming.
The kitchen looks totally different now. Night and day difference. You wouldn’t even recognize it. We installed french doors to the back porch. We put in more cabinets. Exposed the original wood ceiling. Put shiplap walls in. Wood countertops. A dishwasher. It is fabulous.
It still isn’t done, but even so, it is perfect. Even before we started working on it there were things I could do, beautiful things I can bring in, delicious food I could make, to make it feel cozy.
Besides It doesn’t really matter how fancy your house is.
It only matters how you make it feel. My kids might be growing up in a remodel. But I want them to remember the candle that was lit on the countertop every night after the dishes were done. I want them to remember the meals made from scratch. All sitting around our table laughing and talking. I want them to remember the holidays and the hot chocolate, and helping me bake Christmas cookies.
Even if the floor in the kitchen is just sub-floor sealed in from the crawlspace with duct tape. Or if the sink plumbing is exposed because there aren’t cabinet doors yet. Or the pipes to the sink and dishwasher freeze a few times a winter because the house isn’t insulated.
I want them to remember these little details as just some fun adventures in our full and happy life.
Making Christmas special
Besides that, I want winter and Christmas to be especially magical and special.
When we are stuck inside because of the weather, I want it to be an enjoyable time for my family. That if the power goes out, or it is cold, that we can just huddle around the table with some candles and blankets, and talk and enjoy a hot drink. That it will be exciting for them. And it’ll create lasting memories. Not about how the house was torn apart or maybe not as fancy as other people’s houses, but how fun it was to be together.
I want to have traditions that we all do together every year. Drying orange slices and making garlands with those and cinnamon sticks and popcorn. Baking cookies together. As well as drinking lots of coffee, hot chocolate, and other cozy drinks!
Therefore let us strive to make our homes and kitchens a cozy haven for our families.
Merry Christmas everyone.
And blessings.
Pin it for later!
