Managing My Period Naturally

I love my period.
Is that weird?
I feel like that is very uncommon for someone to enjoy their period.
But it really shouldn’t be!
It is such a big part of our lives and womanhood, so it’s important to embrace it, and have a positive mindset around it.
I mean, c’mon! We bleed for around 8.5 years of our lives! Wouldn’t it be nice to appreciate it instead of being miserable for that long?
I know some people hate it so much that they’ll go on medical contraceptives and risk issues later on just to stop their periods.
Craziness!
But our periods aren’t wrong or gross, they are such a big part of our femininity!
Don’t be ashamed of your blood! Or of what your body is meant to do! Don’t hide it.
I feel very strongly about using as many natural and non-toxic things in our lives as possible, and that includes what I use during my period.
Managing My Period Naturally
Reusable pads
I’ve been using cloth pads for over 3 years now, when I steered away from disposable ones, and I couldn’t be happier with them!
Disposable pads and tampons are full of all kinds of scary chemicals that can even lead to cancer later on. Definitely not something I want anywhere near my yoni!
The average woman uses 11,000 tampons in her liftime! That is so many toxins you are putting in your vagina and so much waste going in the landfills!
But it is totally possible to have a waste free and chemical free period!
I have about 5 small / medium pads that I use for the beginning and end of my period when I’m not bleeding as heavily.
And then have about 8 large 14inch pads that I use for the middle of my period when I bleed the heaviest.
I know some people might be freaked out about using cloth pads, maybe think it is gross or something.
But I’m here to tell ya that they are easy to wash and it is very sanitary and safe.
They are really simple to wash. I just throw them in with some of our other clothes and I use my homemade powdered laundry detergent. Then I throw them in the dryer with everything else to dry. I do like hanging clothes to dry, but they stay softer and not as stiff for the next use going in the dryer.

Interlabial pads
This is something that I more recently started using.
My friend made me these pads with some extra cotton muslin that we used for a baby blanket.
They took me a little getting used to. At first it felt like I had a bad wedgie hahaha!
But after getting used to them I’ve been using them for the very end of my period when I still need a little protection but am tired of wearing the bigger pads. So I only wear them for a day or two every month.
HERE is a good post about how to use them and different folds you can use.
So as I said, my friend made me these, but HERE are some good ones I found on Amazon in case any of y’all want to give them a try!
Menstural Cup
These are also known as Moon cups or Diva cups.
I tried this about 3 years ago before I had kids, and didn’t really love it. It freaked me out have have something “up there” that I could feel all the time.
But I also have never used a tampon in my life so I’m definitely not used to the feeling!
Although I’ve heard amazing things about them from almost everyone else I’ve talked to. So I’m definitely going to give them a try again now that I’ve had a couple kids.
I used this one before, it is for ladies who haven’t given birth yet. I will be ordering this one to try again though.
Clary Calm Essential Oil
This fabulous essential oil blend from Doterra is probably my favorite thing to use during my period (or anytime for that matter).
The essential oils that are in this blend are Clary Sage Flower, Lavender Flower, FCF Bergamot Peel, Roman Chamomile Flower, Ylang Ylang Flower, Cedarwood Wood, Geranium Plant, Fennel Seed, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa Herb, and Vitex Leaf / Berry.
It creates a calming, soothing effect during the course of a woman’s menstrual cycle. And it also has a nice cooling effect when used topically.
It helps regulate my hormones and emotions and keeps my mood calmer.
I also love how much it helps with pain from cramps!
My mother-in-law was the first one who introduced me to using this. We were over there for the weekend and I had terrible cramps and she whipped out a bottle and I couldn’t believe how well it worked!
I always use it topically on the back of my neck, my abdomen and and my ankles. I start it when I feel the first signs of cramps and just keep up with it and they never get bad.
You can also use it aromatically in the diffuser or put some on your hands, cup them over your nose and mouth and breathe it in.
Magnesium
I drink my Calm magnesium drink daily anyway, so this one is easy to remember. Most people in the US are very deficient in magnesium, and that can cause a lot of problems. So we all make sure we take our magnesium supplements and I love using my whipped magnesium body butter!
It is a muscle relaxant, so it can really help relax the uterus. That helps ease the cramps and all those uterine contractions.
Plus, it doesn’t just help with menstrual cramps, but also any tight cramping muscles anywhere in the body. I tend to get leg cramps if I don’t take this for awhile, and especially when I’m pregnant. So this is a fabulous supplement all around!
Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
If you only get one herb for your home apothecary, this is the one I’d recommend!
This is an amazing herb for women in particular. It supports women’s reproductive health and it is a uterine tonic. So it is really good for cramps!
I also take this during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Because it is so good for your uterus it can make contractions more effective!
It’s also useful for PMS. It regulates hormones and it can help lessen any mood swings or depression. Which is awesome! Cause we know mood swings are a real thing when you are on your period!
Plus it is rich in iron, magnesium, and vitamin C!
And boom! Those are all the things I use during my period to have as waste-free, chemical-free, and happy menstrual cycle as I can!
Blessings!
