I really miss breastfeeding.

I had my third baby 2 years ago and have been working on resolving some health issues before getting pregnant again, but I sure stinking miss it.

It’s such a special time between mama and baby.

I always make a batch of this tea when I’m pregnant to have on hand for breastfeeding.

Mother's Milk Tea Recipe

Then any days when my supply is just feeling a little slow…Or maybe I let myself get dehydrated or low on minerals. Or I just want a nice hot cup of tea that also is beneficial for me and baby, I can pull out the pre-mixed jar of herbs.

Considering that we are starting to think about baby #4, things like this are on my brain. So I thought I’d finally share this recipe with y’all! It’s been on my list of blog posts to write for years! Talk about procrastinating!

Here is the video I made years ago when my firstborn was just a wee thing. I am always embarrassed of old videos so be nice 😉 I’ve changed a lot since then.

Mother’s Milk Tea Recipe

  • 1/2 cup fennel
  • 1/2 cup red raspberry leaf
  • 1/4 cup alfalfa
  • 1/4 nettle
  • 1/4 cup chamomile

Step 1: Measure out all the herbs into a big mason jar.

Step 2: Shake the jar up lightly to combine.

Step 3: When you’re ready to make a cup of tea, measure out 2 tbsp of the herbal mixture into a mason jar.

Step 4: Boil some filtered water and pour in 3 cups into your herbs. I cover the mason jar with a metal lid immediately after to keep all the steam in, a lot of that steam that evaporates has a lot of the oils and beneficial properties of the tea.

Step 5: Let it steep at least for a few hours. Overnight is better because it makes a bit stronger of an infusion.

Step 6: You can strain out the herbs, lightly heat back up, add some raw honey, and enjoy!

About the herbs

Fennel

This is the main herb in this tea that really boosts your milk supply. So if you don’t need your supply boosted, it’s already high enough, then leave this one out and just enjoy the benefits of the other four herbs.

Women have been using fennel to make more breast milk for centuries. Fennel is a galactagogue (or a substance that increases breast milk).

Fennel tea also supports digestion and gut health, is full of antioxidants, can help relieve menstrual cramps, and boasts antibacterial properties and aids in immune response.

Red raspberry leaf

This is my go-to herb for women’s health.

I even take it throughout my pregnancies to help tone my uterus and prepare it for birth, and then also when I’m not pregnant I take it during my periods. This herb has an important place in traditional and folk medicine.

Alfalfa

Not just something to feed your dairy cow!

Alfalfa is beneficial for humans as well.

This can help alleviate swelling and fluid retention. Promotes a healthy urinarily and digestive tract. Also helps to promote milk flowing smoothly. Alfalfa is used to support thyroid health and it’s thought to ease morning sickness during pregnancy. Alfalfa, like nettle and red raspberry leaf and other green leaves, is also rich in vitamin K which supports healthy circulation.

Nettle

Nettle teas and tonics are a fabulous way to get some extra minerals in!

It is particularly rich in carotene, vitamin C, manganese, iron, calcium, zinc and chromium. As the mother passes anything she eats to her baby during breastfeeding, nettle will not only nourish her body, but also her little baby. Nettle is also a great herb to promote a higher milk supply.

Chamomile

The addition of chamomile in this tea can help with so many things! This is really one of my favorite herbs and its so basic and easy to find!

It can help you sleep better (very important for a new mom), help alleviate anxiety (also good for a new mom ;)), boost immunity, assist with digestive health. Bioactive compounds found in chamomile, like apigenin, quercetin, patuletin, luteolin, etc., have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect.

So go make yourself a batch of this mother’s milk tea recipe, and enjoy a nice warm cup.

And beannachdan (blessings)!

Pin it for later!
