Us farm girls get to have a beauty routine too.

Sometimes you just want to take a nice long hot bath.

You wash dishes, fold laundry, wrangle children, feed the animals, buck the bales of hay. Then when the babies are all napping, you might take a moment to relax.

Some of us like to soak in a tub, some tweeze hairs, some exfoliate, some apply oils and lotions. Some do all of the above.

So for those exfoliatin’ mamas, this recipe is just for you.

A sugar & salt scrub that you can whip up in less than 5 minutes.

There aren’t too many tasks you can accomplish in 5 minutes as a homesteading mama. But this here is one of them.

Sugar + Salt Scrub Recipe

  • 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup organic cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup himalayan pink salt
  • 20 to 30 drops essential oil

Step one: measure out the coconut oil into a small pot. It’s much easier to mix everything if the coconut oil is liquid, or at least nice and soft. So for that reason I prefer to melt it a bit first.

Step two: measure out the sugar and salt into a bowl.

Step three: Pour the melted coconut oil into the bowl. Give it a little stir so that the essential oils aren’t hitting hot coconut oil, or it could damage them.

Step four: Add your essential oils. Use whatever oils you like the best! I’ll add some blend ideas later in the post if you’re not sure what sounds good.

Step five: mix it all up thoroughly and scoop it into a glass jar. I like using a pint mason jar for this. Screw the lid on and keep it in your bathroom, preferably out of direct sunlight unless you’re planning on using it up really fast. Which isn’t hard to do, its pretty luxurious!

Use as needed! I Just scoop out a little with my fingers and start exfoliating gently.

This is going to not only exfoliate your skin, but also super moisturize your skin from all the nourishing oils.

Rinse off with warm water when you are done.

Why exfoliate?

Very simply put, exfoliating is the process of shedding off dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. While our body naturally sheds and makes room for new skin cells every 30 days or so, oftentimes that might not be enough to achieve the glowing skin we all want.

Exfoliation can help reduce and prevent acne, heal any ingrown hairs (or prevent if you are prone to them). It can help with dry skin (especially when it’s a recipe that has a lot of healthy oils like this one), it can unclog pores, it boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage. Exfoliation also stimulates collagen synthesis. In this way, exfoliating actually offers anti-aging benefits, which might be why so many people swear that it helps lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
