Funny how life likes to change your plans for you.
I had this post partially written as “what I’m preparing for postpartum with baby #3”. And then little miss decides to show up a few weeks early.
So here we are with, what I actually think is a much better post…what I used the most postpartum after baby #3!
What I Used Most Postpartum After Baby #3
Cloud Nine Milk Moon tincture
After Sofia was born I had some pretty intense baby blues. Bordering on postpartum depression. It was bad.
I’d sit in the bathroom crying, and I had no idea why. It scared me to death.
So with any babies since then, I am absolutely sure to get all the hormone support I can possibly find.
Cloud nine MILK MOON tincture is something I had been hearing about from several friends. It looked like the perfect addition to my mood-boosting, hormone-supporting arsenal I was collecting. I sent a link to my midwife just to check and she said it looked awesome! That several of those herbs are supportive of the adrenals, which I had been struggling with during pregnancy. So I bought two bottles in preparation for the birth.
I would just take a couple dropperfuls a few times a day, mostly when I’d start to notice those sad, emotional feelings roll in. And it helped so much! I’ll definitely be keeping a few of these on hand for each of my future postpartums.
After ease tincture
This is an absolute MUST HAVE! This is for after-pains. Those horrendous contraction pains that start happening after the baby has already been born that are helping to shrink your uterus.
You mostly want this for your second and and any future births. It seems to be that first-time mamas don’t have this much at all, or at least not too badly. But man, you better have some of this on hand for any of your next births! It’s a literal life-saver.
Postpartum restorative tonic
This tart and sweet syrup combines nutrient dense, iron-building herbs with restorative adaptogens. This is such a great nutrient builder to have on hand for those sensitive postpartum days! It is designed to support the body in maintaining a state of wellness and vitality after birth.
Yet another win from Milk Moon Herbs!
Placenta
Yup. I’m one of those nuts who eats her placenta after birth.
You heard me right.
Now, after you’ve picked your jaw up off the ground, let me explain…
There is a lot of research out there showing that eating your placenta can help with after-pains, hemorrhaging, milk supply, energy levels, provide important micronutrients, such as iron, and so much more. The main reason I eat mine is for hormone support. This organ that has been sustaining your baby for months, is filled with so many beneficial hormones. It can really make a big difference in baby blues and postpartum depression if you consume all those hormones you just lost by eating the placenta!
I prepare mine my steaming it (to kill the bacteria) and then cutting it up in little pieces and freezing it. Then I take them like little pills whenever I feel my body asking for some. But other people sometimes actually dehydrate and encapsulate it, or put it in smoothies, etc. The way I’ve done it just seems nice and simple.
Muslin robe
This was seriously the best.
I really should have gotten one of these with my first with how much I loved it.
It was the perfect piece to lounge around the house in, in those very early postpartum days. Plus, it was super handy for breastfeeding at night. When you’re co-sleeping you can’t pull the blankets all the way up to your chin anymore, because there is a little babe at your chest. So you have to leave the top of the blankets on your waist, and then use something like a robe to keep your arms and upper-body warm, while still leaving an opening in the front for easy midnight breastfeeding.
Cloth pads
I am a stickler for using zero-waste non-toxic items like cloth pads, instead of disposable pads filled with chemicals. Especially in that raw postpartum time when you are open and healing. You want only the best for your yoni.
After all, you did just push a baby out of it. Give it a little bit of a break!
I used the heavy flow nighttime pads at first when my bleeding was heaviest and then switched to the medium flow after about a week.
Granny panties + chux pads
I always use the sanitary briefs and blue chux pads that come in the birth kit put together by my midwife.
Not super flattering, but super helpful.
Herbal sitz bath and padcicles
I used THIS homemade herbal blend with my first two during postpartum. With my third, my sweet friend Cynthia sent me a Postpartum Soothe herbal kit and I made a sitz bath and a ton of padcicles with it. She even gave me a code for y’all so you can get $5 off this kit for yourselves (WILSONHOMESTEAD at checkout).
Ningxia
I had adrenal fatigue issues during my last pregnancy. I was just so tired from three back-to-back pregnancies and moving during this third one. So I set out to find some things to take that would help support my adrenals. Ningxia was something that so many people recommended. It packed with powerful antioxidants and superfoods. Ningxia has wolfberry, plum, aronia, cherry, blueberry, and pomegranate juices and extracts. It also contains a blend of high quality essential oils including orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine. These ingredients combine to help prevent oxidative stress, support normal cellular function, and promote healthy energy levels. It definitely helped with my energy and restoring my adrenals during pregnancy, so I continued taking it postpartum for awhile too!
Adrenal cocktail drink
And going along with the last one on supporting my adrenals, is the adrenal cocktail! This is like, my new favorite thing! Its so delicious, and it also gives such an energy and mood boost. The strategy behind the adrenal cocktail, is that when you drink this at certain times of day when your adrenals would be more fatigued, it gives them the right ratios of easy to digest carbs (OJ), a saturated fat (raw cream), protein (collagen), salt, potassium (OJ), and vitamin C (OJ).
Here is my recipe:
- 1 cup orange juice
- 2 tbsp. raw cream
- 2 tbsp. collagen (use my code WILSONHOMESTEAD to save on your order)
- a good quality salt, like the Icelandic mineral salt from Crucial Four (use my code WILSONHOMESTEAD to save on your order)
Liver Capsules or Prenatal vitamins
I’ve been slowly making the switch over to taking organ meat capsules instead of a multivitamin or prenatal. It is so much more bio-available for your body to digest and use then a more synthetic version of the vitamins.
If you are someone who takes a prenatal, continue taking it even after the baby is born. It really helps with energy and restoring your body after a pregnancy. Since I had stopped taking the prenatal already and was mostly taking a liver capsule I just continued that postpartum. It helps with iron levels after loosing blood giving birth, helps with energy, restoring vitamins, and more! You can read more about the benefits of live HERE. I really like THIS liver supplement.
Magnesium supplement
Magnesium is everything y’all.
I am SUCH a huge advocate of taking a magnesium supplement consistently. Most people are actually deficient in it nowadays and it can cause so many problems!
There are several forms of magnesium, the most common being magnesium citrate. That is the form of the popular Calm magnesium supplement. But that form is really not very effective. It can give you diarrhea and just pass right through your system. It’s harder to digest.
I take the glycinate form of magnesium. It is really easily absorbed into your body and it’s also really calming. This is a great one to take right before bed for a really good nights sleep. But also if you take it in the morning it doesn’t make you drowsy, just calm 😉 I get mine HERE.
Probiotic and colostrum supplements
Now these two supplements are such a good immune and gut health boost. I upped them after Vivian was born because I was struggling with a kidney infection. It actually got so bad I had to take antibiotics. As much as I hate them!! So in between and especially after the round of antibiotics I would take a lot of probiotics. I also got on a really good colostrum supplement to really boost my immune system for dealing with all the stress on my body.
So. This being my third baby, I knew more what I’d want or need. It was such a nice experience, and I felt like I had plenty of supplies for supporting myself. The postpartum and newborn season is just my favorite, and I really attribute a lot of that to having the right support. Be it supplements, tinctures, help from people, comfy cloths, whatever!
I hope this list was helpful. Maybe it gave you some ideas of what to have on hand!
And blessings!
Martha
I need to get a good source of magnesium! Thanks for sharing.
