This stuff is magic y’all!

I tore in three places during the birth of Sofia, and within 4 weeks you couldn’t even tell that I had had a baby down there! My midwife was shocked when she saw how fast I recovered from those rips! And I partly credit my fast healing with using this herb bath!

Postpartum Herb Bath

  • 1 1/2 cup plantain leaf
  • 1 cup calendula flowers, whole
  • 1 cup witch hazel leaf
  • 1/2 cup lavender flowers, whole
  • 1/2 cup chamomile flowers, whole
  • you can also add in some high quality sea salts for the minerals

Step 1: Combine all these ingredients, measuring them loosely, in a large bowl. Stir em all up, and I like to store them in quart mason jars. This recipe makes enough for approximately 9 baths, depending on how you measure stuff – it really doesn’t have to be too exact.

Step 2: Boil a large stockpot of water, and add 1 to 1/2 cup of the mixture that we just made, turn the heat off and let it steep for a good long time.

Postpartum Herb Bath

Step 3: Now you want to strain off all the herbs from your tea, unless you want some seriously clogged plumbing. Which, after Luke just replaced the plumbing for the entire house, he would not appreciate so much. I like to strain them right over the bathtub – keeps it simple. But if you wanted to get all fancy you could even put them all in a really big tea bag before you brew the tea. I don’t have the brain capacity at the moment for stuff like that – ya know, post-baby brains are not workin’ so well.

Step 4: Draw a warm half bath along with your strained tea – just enough to cover your lady parts. And just sit there in all that concentrated herbal goodness for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Now you can fill the bathtub the rest of the way up. You can even bring baby in there with you at this point if you would like – or just enjoy a bath all to yourself.

Postpartum Herb Bath

About The Herbs

Plantain

This is an ancient plant that is used for healing. Most people nowadays just see it as a weed and have no idea how amazing it is! I did another post awhile back on making a plantain tincture – so it’s good for lots of stuff, not just teas. Its natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it great for speeding up the recovery of wounds, and for itching or pain associated with skin problems. Which makes it an awesome addition to this bath, since it is probably pretty inflamed down there after just having a baby stretch it all out. Sorry, just tellin’ the truth.

Calendula

Not only does this flower smell really nice, but like plantain it also has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, which can just be really helpful with healing in the postpartum.

Witch Hazel

This herb also helps reduce inflammation and skin irritation. It is great for hemorrhoids and it is also an astringent, so that can help a lot with any bleeding you might have going on.

Lavender

Lavender is very relaxing and stress-relieving, it can help with any anxiety you might still have about the birth, or just anything else going on in life. It contains antimicrobial properties, so it can keep away infections. Plus, like the first three herbs it helps heal wounds and take down inflammation.

Chamomile

This herb is very similar to lavender in its benefits. Plus, they are both just so pretty! That’s important too, right?

I hope you enjoy this herb bath as much as I did! If you would like to be able to use this (or give it to another expecting mama), but don’t have the time or ingredients to make it, I have it available HERE in my shop!

And blessings.
